The EU Bioeconomy Strategy aims to support the sustainable growth and development of the EU bio-based sectors while creating jobs, innovation and services. Despite the recognized potential of the algae biomass value chain, significant knowledge gaps still exist regarding the dimension, capability, organization and structure of the algae production in Europe. This study presents and analyses the results of a comprehensive mapping and detailed characterization of the algae production at the European scale, encompassing macroalgae, microalgae, and the cyanobacteria Spirulina. This work mapped 447 algae and Spirulina production units spread between 23 countries, which represents an important addition to the reported number of algae producing countries. More... |

This study investigated the dynamics of cyanobacteria in two deep, eutrophic reservoirs in a semi-arid region of Brazil during periods of stratification and destratification. Four collections were carried out at each reservoir at two depths at three-month intervals. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, water transparency, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, orthophosphate and total nitrogen. Phytoplankton density was quantified for the determination of the biomass of cyanobacteria. The data were analyzed using CCA. Higher mean phytoplankton biomass values (29.8 mm³.L-1) occurred in the period of thermal stratification. A greater similarity in the phytoplankton communities also occurred... |

An improved natural-draft double burner biomass cookstove was developed. The study became imperative to minimize the increasing rate of deforestation, harmful gas accumulation as well as excessive fuel consumption and heat loss experienced in the use of the inefficient and traditional cooking method. The study was conducted in the Department of Agricultural and Bio-resources Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. The cookstove was designed based on performance, affordability, and usability, and it was constructed purely from locally available materials. Stainless steel was used to construct the stove cladding; it possesses lesser thermal conductivity of 14.9 W/mk as compared to aluminum and mild steel which have 174.6 W/mk and 80.2 W/mk,... |

Ultraphytoplankton is composed by a group of organisms phylogenetically diverse, which contribute significantly to the total biomass and primary production in different oceanic and coastal pelagic systems. The success of ultraphytoplankton is attributed to its high efficiency in capturing light and nutrients, due to their small cell size and low sinking rate. The community structure is driven by the interaction among biotic and abiotic variables, such as temperature, nutrients, light and predators. The objective of this work was to assess the ecological importance of ultraphytoplankton organisms at the EPEA station, situated in the Buenos Aires coastal pelagic system (Argentina, SW Atlantic), during the period 2000-2009. In particular, ultraphytoplankton... |
